Area and Administration

Let’s start with the size. The area of the country is 78 866 km2 which makes the Czech republic number 115 on the list of countries by area. The country shares borders with 4 other countries (Austria, Germany, Poland and Slovakia).

You might know that Czech Republic consists of 3 historical lands – Bohemia (Čechy), Moravia (Morava) and Silesia (Slezsko). However, these are not administrative units. As for official administration, the country is divided into 14 regions (sg. kraj, pl. kraje) and 6.254 municipalities.

According to the Czech Statistical Office, the number of inhabitants by December 31, 2023 was 10.900.555 which makes it a country in place 86 in a list of world countries by population. It’s an increase of approximately 600.000 since the split of Czechoslovakia. 1.181.610 of all inhabitants live in Prague (compare to the smallest municipality Vysoká Lhota in Pelhřimov district with 16 inhabitants as of 2022). And if you wonder about the foreigners, by August 31, 2024, there were 1.077.342 foreigners of 193 nationalities with any type of permit.

According to data from 2022, the life expectancy for women was 82 years and for men 76,1 years.

The average age of people who marry was 30,3 years for women and 32,5 for men and the average age for first-time mothers was 28,8 years.
