I believe that almost every Czech person who used to visit their grandma in chalupa (house in the countryside) has nostalgic memories of this meal. Many of us know the fruit dumplings of our grandmothers and mashed strawberries with sugar were something all kids looked forward to. Well and the cheese dumplings with strawberry sauce are a simpler and faster (but not less delicious!) version of classic strawberry dumplings.
Stuffing the fruit inside the dumpling requires more time and so this recipe cheats this step by making the dumplings without the fruit and pouring fruit sauce over them. Strawberry sauce is the most typical but you can make the dumplings with any other fruit as well.

- 250 g / 8.8 oz of fresh quark or cottage cheese (best if you can get your hands on the Czech cottage cheese tvaroh)
- 240 g / 8.5 oz of krupice – see our Flour Guide – it’s a large grain flour used for dumplings and children’s purées. You can use all-purpose flour as well although getting the right flour will make a difference
- 1 egg
- pinch of salt
- 0,5 kg / 17 oz of fresh strawberries or other fruit
- 1 tbsp of powder sugar
How to Make the Cheese Dumplings with Strawberry Sauce
In a bowl combine the cheese and one egg. Add a pinch of salt and the flour and combine well. Make small dumplings (you should be able to eat them without cutting) and get some water boiling in a saucepan.
Put the dumplings in the boiling water and boil until they float and then another minute. Take them out and strain them.
Mash the strawberries with a fork, add the powder sugar and that’s your sauce. If you want to fancy it up, pass them through a blender and you can also add milk or cream but I really recommend to try it at least once just with strawberries and sugar!
And serve! Cheese strawberry dumplings on a plate, sauce over them and enjoy! You can serve them hot but I find them much better cold, especially in summer!
